In White Fence Revisited, Alfonso Morales describes:” She portrayed Cristina while she, in turn, used an Instamatic camera on Whittier Boulevard outside an establishment that sold tortillas and Mexican food, bearing the name of the last Mexican Emperor, albeit with a spelling error—Cuahutémoc instead of Cuauhtémoc.” The subject captured the photographer here, as both are recognized as documenting the other. References to Mexico are pervasive in the streets of East Los Angeles, although for many cholos, Mexico is a place more of legend and nostalgia, rather than a lived experience. Life north of the Rio Grande becomes an entirely different culture of its own.
