"One feels that Iturbide's animals carry secret codes. Is this bull running amongst pigeons an ominous sign or, on the contrary, a flash of revelation or inspiration? Iturbide's images are not so much a record of an isolated event, but a collection of free-floating metaphors. It would be a mistake to think of her photographs as merely reflecting the places where they were shot: independently of their locations, all belong to the same imaginary non-place composed of symbolic events. In a sense, her works are vistas on an alternative world where the spectacle of power and industry has been shunned. Iturbide collects places of natural, social, or inner resistance; fragments of worlds which reluctantly converse with modernity and the West. But this, in essence, is also what photography is: the modern medium by which we symbolically battle against modern change. In a way, photography is modernity's bad conscience."
