Self-portraits possess a magical, ritual quality. *Eyes to Fly With, Coyoacan* references one of the favorite motifs in surrealist iconography: the negation of the eye, by wounding or closing it, to access another, broader, deeper, and more truthful vision. In turn, Iturbide's self-portraits with animals—snails, a fish sealing its mouth, and snakes emerging from it—have an almost shamanic quality, an invocation of nature as an otherness from which to see and speak.
