The work is part of her celebrated South Texas series. Iturbide explains: “The animals that appear in my photographs, in general, are the animals that live with the people from the villages. Photographs of other animals have also received attention, such as the birds I did for an essay. There is a poem by San Juan de la Cruz and one by Attar, a Sufi poet, in which they talk about the conditions of the birds. These readings spiritually served me to bring me closer to the birds.”
