César Martínez has always revered the spectacle of bullfighting and often highlights the parallelism of gruesome and elegance in his work. In this Toro, watercolor —which requires a careful and precise hand, is the medium of choice. Similarly, the artist focuses on the graceful control of the matador within the fateful context of going toe to toe with a much larger, stronger opponent. Martínez references the famous Mexican matador Fermin Espinosa in a 2020 interview with Dr. Ruben C. Cordova, “Fermin could handle any type of bull with poise— Fermin was referred to as el maestro de maestros (the master of masters, the teacher of teachers) and he is as venerated in Spain as he is in Mexico.”
