In her buoyant photographic composition, Iturbide offers a rare glimpse into the personality and humor of the iconic Mexican artist Francisco Toledo, here playing with his Xolo (a hairless dog). "Francisco is a famous painter and a good friend of mine," Iturbide notes, "We often work together, and we play around while taking photographs."

Toledo is mirthful, laughing as an energetic Xolo dog leaps above his head. Iturbide’s photographs not only bear witness to everyday Mexican society but also express an intense personal and poetic lyricism about her native country. She captures everyday culture, rituals, and religions, telling a visual story of Mexico since the late 1970’s. Iturbide documents the daily lives and the diversity of the Mexican people, always with an eye to their dignity.
