While in residence at Berlin’s Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Ethel Shipton created a daily mural on her studio wall using only locally found tape. She documented this ephemeral process, knowing the work would change form after her departure from Berlin. This print captures the permanence of Shipton’s temporary tape-and-vinyl mural—a depiction of her San Antonio neighborhood—created for the Berlin exhibition Fünf. Shipton’s work observes and highlights the idiosyncrasies of a place through the visual and auditory traces left by others.
