"Girl Dad" was crafted in collaboration with the Buddha Factory in Jingdazhen, China, after Datchuk noticed that no laughing Buddha statues depicted female children playing with the traditional figure. These laughing Buddhas, often shown with children, are common figurines in Chinese households, meant to bring good luck. Indeed, the artist herself had one of these laughing Buddhas in her home growing up, though it was not until later that she realized these sculptures depicted only young boys joyfully climbing the central figure. "Girl Dad" is a feminist revision of Buddha statues that reflect the values of patriarchal systems centered on male experience and representation. In this piece, the girls are finally given one of their first invitations to play and be present as well.
