Ruiz-Healy Art is please to present a dedicated booth to the work of Colombian artist Johanna Calle at the IFPDA Fine Print Fair. Calle investigates the boundaries of lines with a preference for a black and white palette using wire, stitching, and text, along with more traditional use of ink and pencil. “To me, the medium of drawing is equal to a language. A language that is constantly adapting itself.” – Johanna Calle

Her exploration of drawing and pushing the medium into a wide variety of techniques are at the heart of her formal, conceptual practice.

In 1992, Calle won a British Council Scholarship to pursue a master’s degree in Fine Arts at Chelsea College of Art, London and in 2001, the Alliançe Française Fellowship at the Cité des Arts in Paris. In 2012, the Central Bank from the Republic of Colombia minted two coins after her drawings, currently circulating as currency. She is married to Julio César Pérez Navarrete, her collaborator and researcher.

Calle’s one woman exhibitions include: Silentes, 2015-2016, a retrospective at the Museum of Art at the Bank of the Republic, Bogotá, Colombia and Museo Amparo, Puebla, Mexico; Grafos, 2014 and Intertexts, 2012 at Marilia Razuk Gallery, Sao Paulo, Brazil; Foto-Gramatica, 2013, Krinzinger Gallery, Vienna, Austria.

Calle has been selected for numerous international exhibitions and biennales. In 2016, she exhibited in the 20th Sydney Biennale, Australia. In 2015, she participated in the IV Trienal Poli/Gráfica, San Juan, Puerto Rico, and in 2014, she was included in SITELines: Unsettled Landscapes, New Mexico, USA. Other group shows include Lines at Hauser & Wirth in Zurich, Switzerland (2014). In 2016, Calle had a solo-exhibition at Galerie Krinzinger Gallery in Vienna, Austria and Galeria Marilia Razuk in São Paulo, Brazil. Calle’s artwork will also be included in the forthcoming exhibitions, Home – So Different, So Appealing, which will open at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 2017 and Museum of Fine Arts, Houston in 2018.
