“I was lucky enough to get a call in 1979 from Francisco Toledo, who, without knowing me, offered me the [Juchitan] project...I then spent long periods of time living there. I was able to support myself thanks to the lithographs Francisco gave me as presents to sell, because in those days I was completely broke. In the Juchitan I spent a lot of time at the public market, hanging out with the women there, these big, strong politicized, emancipated, wonderful women. I discovered this world and I made it my business to spend time with them and they gave me access to their daily works and to their traditions.” - Graciela Iturbide, May, 2002.
