Andrés Ferrandis Spanish, b. 1965
Born in Valencia, Spain, Andrés Ferrandis studied at the University of La Laguna and received his MFA in painting from the University of Seville in 1997. Ferrandis is known for his evocative geometric abstract constructions redolent with the traces of perception, what the artist calls “footprints left behind.” By implementing new media and materials, his work has moved outside the conventional limits of the stretcher, developing structurally and expanding into non-conventional, hybrid pieces and installations. His new constructions of objects and collage on paper utilize photography, fragments of text, and cut-paper organic and geometric forms that seem to drift and swirl through landscapes of memory.
Varied in their materials, the new works also introduce another hybridity: elements are echoed in the compositions that bridge Ferrandis’ painting history with his design practice in furniture and architecture. Neo-baroque flourishes, a bold but highly controlled palette, and pop art tactics of appropriation are also present.
Ferrandis’ first exhibitions were accompanied by Bancaixa awards from Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno and Fundación Bancaja Valencia, followed by travels in Cuba, New York, and Madrid. A resident of Miami since 2002, he has split his time between Florida, México and Spain, for much of the past decade.
Ferrandis's work has been featured in numerous international publications, and he has exhibited in many museums including the Miami Art Museum, Miami, FL, and Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno, Valencia, Spain.
